Let's talk about your project

The Rangitoto–Motutapu Causeway Bridge is a vital link between two of Auckland’s most iconic islands, enabling both heavy vehicle access to Motutapu’s operational farm and safe pedestrian access for visitors. The existing bridge was approaching the end of its service life and unable to support the growing operational demands of DOC, especially its 5.5 tonne load limit.

Frame Group was engaged to investigate replacement options that would meet increased structural requirements while respecting the site’s cultural and environmental sensitivity. Rangitoto and Motutapu Islands hold deep historical significance, and the bridge design needed to complement the natural landscape and preserve ecological integrity.

Working closely with DOC and other stakeholders, Frame Group provided a complete package of services from concept design through to detailed engineering, consenting and construction management. The final solution involved bypassing the original abutments with a new precast concrete culvert structure that increased load capacity while maintaining aesthetic sensitivity. The new design allowed for safe vehicle and pedestrian access, with modular units enabling fast, low-impact construction.
