As part of the wider development of the Taranaki-King Country Te Araroa Trail, Frame Group was engaged by the Department of Conservation and local mana whenua to design and deliver a new timber pedestrian bridge across the Mangaokewa River. The original crossing had been heavily damaged by flooding and was no longer safe or accessible.
Frame Group developed a double-span glulam timber bridge designed for long-term durability in a challenging flood-prone environment. The structure incorporated flood clearance and scour protection, with a central pier designed to resist debris loading and future climate impacts. Accessibility and community inclusion were central to the design. The bridge includes wheelchair access and is wide enough for maintenance equipment while discouraging ATV use.
Collaboration with mana whenua was a key element of the project. The design was developed through shared hui and includes cultural elements such as wayfinding, information panels, and provision for future art and sculpture integration. The final bridge reflects the unique character of Mangaokewa Reserve, a steep, forested area of high ecological and cultural significance, and provides safe, resilient access for visitors and the local community.
