Let's talk about your project

The Manganuku bridge, located in the Waioeka Valley was designed and built by the Public Works Department (PWD) between 1928 and 1929.  It is one of the last remaining examples of a Howe Truss Bridge in New Zealand.  The Manganuku bridge provides access to the Waioeka Gorge Scenic Reserve and Manganuku Track.

Frame Group worked alongside the Department of Conservation to restore this piece of history for everyone to enjoy.  As the bridge classified as Category 2 by Heritage New Zealand, special care and consideration was taken to maintain the heritage of this site.

The restoration included two stages:

Stage 1: Installation of temporary support structure.

Stage 2: Remedial work consisting of:

  • Replacement of critical timber truss members and barrier components using hardwood timber

  • Re-alignment of truss members and tightening of bolts and tie components

  • Washing and application of preservative treatment to hardwood timber

  • Application of corrosion protection to steel components
