This award-winning urban walkway has become one of Auckland’s most popular new visitor experiences, drawing thousands of people into the forest canopy at Kauri Glen Reserve.
Originally scoped as a standard track upgrade, Frame Group proposed a reimagined solution: a 60-metre long, 18-metre high bridge threaded through mature kauri trees without disturbing their root zones. The result is a step-free, elevated structure that provides all-weather access between the reserve, a nearby college and key commuter routes, while also serving as a valued community amenity. It has become a destination in its own right, attracting visitors from across Auckland and beyond.
Frame Group led the project from early concept through to completion, delivering design, consent management and stakeholder engagement. The finished bridge is a lasting example of thoughtful, context-sensitive infrastructure that supports both people and place.
Public response to the bridge has been overwhelmingly positive. It attracted more than 52,000 visitors in its first month, generated significant media and social media coverage, and strengthened the profile of urban green spaces in Auckland. Its design allows people to experience kauri forest at canopy level, while protecting sensitive ecological values below.
