Detailed Design and Engineering
Frame Group has been working with Wellington City Council to progressively upgrade the extensive track network in Te Kopahou Reserve, a rugged, previously hard to access, and ecologically significant landscape on Wellington’s south coast.
Following an initial feasibility study of the entire reserve network, Frame Group developed long-term design solutions to improve public access across 12 km of trails, including two new coastal bridges. These upgrades will support a wide range of uses, from cycle trails and tramping routes to family-friendly walks that connect with local communities.
Designs respond to the reserve’s steep terrain, cultural values and unique biodiversity. New bridges have been planned to protect culturally significant waterways, avoiding foot traffic through sensitive streambeds. Track alignments were developed in close collaboration with ecologists to support predator control, native planting and the reintroduction of species such as kiwi.
The project is part of a long-term vision to improve access, celebrate both Māori and European history, and strengthen community connection with this dramatic coastal environment.
