Pukekiwiriki Pā Reserve is a Historic Reserve under the Reserves Act 1977. The Pā is regarded by the mana whenua as a place of historic, archaeological and cultural importance.
Frame Group was engaged by Auckland Council to provide design and contract management services for the upgrade works to the existing summit track at Pukekiwiriki Pā.
Project features:
The formation of 67m length x 1.2m wide aggregate surfaced track
The formation of 3m length x 1.0m wide track
The installation of 19m length x 1.2m wide timber boxed steps
The installation of 9m length x 1.2m wide timber staircase, with an iwi designed handrails on both sides
Reuben Kirkwood of TIKAcreative developed the iwi inspired handrails for the staircase. The staircase represents the Māori practice of using ladders and platforms to access and protect the Pā and Kāinga. The red-painted battens acknowledges the Tangata Whenua and the darker paint represents the Whenua.
